well, "aleatoric music" could be like "scandinavian metal" in that it is a musical genre. i think of it like a marketing phrase.

and chance, well that's a word with multiple meanings- all correct. i'd guess you can say that it's a role of the dice which one is being used in a given context ...

indeterminacy, to me, is an echo of impermanence in two ways. first, it's a term that describes itself negatively [what it is not]; second, i think the influence of zen buddhism on john's thinking is felt most strongly with this term.

don't misunderstand, i know full well that indeterminacy does not mean the same thing as impermanence. and from your description, your correspondent seems more interested in provoking an argument then actually discussing and learning something. your time may be better spent 'picking mushrooms' instead.
