Colleagues:

I'm of two minds regarding MacDonald.  On one hand, we don't want to give 
further credence to her screed by overreacting.  As a former member of the 
media, I know that her moment in the sun will pass pretty quickly.  On the 
other, I feel that a more organized response is called for here.  Would the 
members of this list be interested in a joint letter to the LA Times or other 
media that give her airplay/print space?  If so, who should give a try at the 
first draft?  I think it would be hard to write anything better than the 
first response to her by the Stanford grad student/SAFER member (sorry, her 
name eludes me at the moment).  But there's power in numbers, and if we say 
we represent over 200 colleges & universities, over 30 national and state 
organizations and over 60 independent researchers and community advocates, I 
would think that would have some impact.
