Claire,
I had been thinking along the same lines and was pondering the whole
idea while driving in this morning. We had bad flooding yesterday, but
it was absolutely beautiful today, less than 24 hours after the mad
chaos, there were little water falls with icicles everywhere.
I'm thinking instead of addressing MacDonald specifically, I think
perhaps our letter should target the survivors and allies out there. Let
them know that we aren't allowing such negative attention slow us down,
but instead, are using it as a way to bring us all together.
I'm going to offer up a first sentence, maybe someone out there will be
willing to write the next one, and so on?
"We are the combined voices of more than (does someone have the number
of us on the list-serv) professionals, survivors, friends of survivors
and allies known as the SAPC list-serv. We wish to publicly state that
while others may choose to dismiss the crime of sexual assault, we
continue to be dedicated to helping those who have been victimized by
providing the highest quality services we are capable of and continue
the ongoing efforts of our prevention education campaigns......

Subject: Response to MacDonald
Colleagues:
I'm of two minds regarding MacDonald. On one hand, we don't want to
give further credence to her screed by overreacting. As a former member
of the media, I know that her moment in the sun will pass pretty
quickly. On the other, I feel that a more organized response is called
for here. Would the members of this list be interested in a joint
letter to the LA Times or other media that give her airplay/print space?
If so, who should give a try at the first draft? I think it would be
hard to write anything better than the first response to her by the
Stanford grad student/SAFER member (sorry, her name eludes me at the
moment). But there's power in numbers, and if we say we represent over
200 colleges & universities, over 30 national and state organizations
and over 60 independent researchers and community advocates, I would
think that would have some impact.
Feedback and thoughts welcome.
Claire
