Dear Colleagues,
I am in agreement with those who believe that a response to Heather MacDonald's unfounded assertions is important. And it is not difficult. Citing the research from Dr. Koss's response is all that is needed. As Claire suggests, an organized response might be the most effective. I am disappointed that CALCASA has chosen not to respond. As a member of CALCASA and a rape prevention educator on a college campus since 1979, I would have appreciated the opportunity to weigh in on this decision.
It's never ok in my opinion to let demagogues have the last word. In the early days it was difficult to convince folks of the seriousness and extent of rape on college campuses because research was scarce. Now we have bodies of research supporting the pioneering work of Mary Koss. Lets use it!
Regards,
Gillian
