I was spending time with both Johns around the time that Oswald introduced the term “pluderphonics,” but it never seemed relevant to ask Cage about it. This was mainly because, at least at that time, the only music Cage listened to was live performances. He did not have any sound system, turntable, or CD player in his apartment. He did have a Sony cassette machine with a built in speaker that he would pull out of a closet when I brought a cassette for him to listen to. Since this aspect of Oswald’s work was purely media based, it didn’t seem like something Cage would have been aware of.
