Like Rob, I couldn't find it in X. Although probably not the origin of the quotation, the dating of 1982 may refer to the appearance of the phrase in question on the sleeve of a 1982 experimental music compilation LP called 'An Afflicted Man's Musica Box' released by the label United Dairies and featuring tracks by artists including AMM. Subject: [silence] Source of Cage Quote
A journalist has asked me if I know the source for the following quote:
"You don't have to call it music if the term shocks you"
It is used frequently online, including on Peter's page for Cage. But the only attribution I have is "John Cage (1982)". My guess is that it could be in the last part of the Diary, but I don't have a copy of X here.
