Our student conduct office provides an
additional 6 hours of training, which includes a mock hearing, for hearing
board members who wish to qualify to hear sexual misconduct cases. This
training is facilitated by the sexual violence prevention office (CARE) staff.
All students/staff who wish to hear these cases, must complete and pass a short
quiz and participate in all 6 hours before they are qualified. During the mock
hearing, we evaluate the questions asked, the evidence provided, etc. We are
in the process of taping all of the actors so that the mock hearing is
sustainable and we don’t have to rely on new actors each time. The University of California system is
using this training program (loosely based on Brett Sokolow’s hearing board
training manual) and other training programs (as well as consultation with Ed
Stoner) to identify a best practices training for sexual misconduct cases.
This should be distributed to the UC campuses by year’s end. Mandy ________________________________________________ Mandy K. Mount, Ph.D., Director Phone: (949) 824-7273 Please Note:

Elizabeth M. [mailto:] We are in the process of reviewing and revising our
conduct code and sexual assault policy. One part of this is to create a separate
judicial board to hear sexual misconduct cases. I’ve been looking at
policies and procedures from a variety of schools and haven’t seen any that are
doing this. I’m wondering if any of you have formal or informal hearing
boards for sexual misconduct cases. If so can you share your policy or
procedure that talks about it? I’m especially
interested to see anything you have set up about qualifications of the board
members, how they are (chosen) appointed, and any training requirements.
