I used the unedited version - last year in my class and again this year - though I teach at a law school so my students are older than most college students.

I advised my students repeatedly in the weeks earlier that they should expect to be upset and should feel free to leave - etc -

None of my students did leave. I opened the film to the entire school because I have a disproportionate number of women in my class and it's a film that really should be seen my males -

All of my students wrote reflection papers thereafter - and none of them were inordinately distressed. the most common comment was "I was shocked to learn X Y or Z" - and "this was an eye-opener - ".

I have seen the film many times - and watched it recently at a showing at Harvard. Nobody left the room that I saw - and the discussion afterwards was excellent with many students wanting to talk about how to create more openness about healthy sexuality while also appreciating the harm of porn.

There is nothing super controversial about the film. The worst parts are the scenes that depict violence. Torture scenes with women being drowned - heads in toilets - and strangulation. The sexual scenes are not always explicit - though there are quite a few that are. Some pixillation is used - even in the unedited version - and the filmmaker is careful to interrupt when things get intense.

it is a very important film - worth seeing no matter how much controversy or discomfort is expressed.

In my opinion - it could have and should have been even more explicit and more revealing of the more sordid features of the business -

the filmmaker believes the explosion of the industry and insatiable demand on the internet will inevitably lead to more violent porn - so more films will need to be made to expose the increasingly violent nature of the harm. this film is just the beginning.

Hello,

In addition to Wendy, how many of you have screened the documentary “The Price of Pleasure”?
Did you use the edited or full (explicit ) version? Were there any other considerations in showing the film?

I am planning to screen this film here at Emory, but I am facing the concern of some administrators. I would like to meet with them and show a list of other schools that have screened this film.

Any information and feedback you can provide regarding your event would be appreciated.

Thank you!
Aline

Hello list -
My students are looking for a movie to show for Sexual Assault
Awareness
Month. In the past we've done a week with movies and discussion every
night. This year we only have space on the calendar for one. Is there
one movie that sticks out to you as great for awareness, entertaining,
and inspires discussion?
Thanks,
Emily
