we have screened The Price of Pleasure a number of times here at CSU over the
past year. we choose to show the edited version and i believe it is still
very powerful.
on three separate occasions i have had students leave the room and become
physically ill as a result of the images. we have found that it is important
to provide a heads up before the film starts letting students know that some
of the scenes are super graphic (even on the edited version) and that they
should practice self care.
in my experience this film can be really triggering for three groups of
people: survivors of interpersonal violence, men who consume porn and women
who are in relationships with male-identified consumers of porn.
also, since the film is so powerful, i have found that typically students
arent ready to process/discuss the film immediately after viewing it.
sometimes i will do a 10 minute "free write" to allow students to internally
process before the discussion begins. i have also used a 15 minute break
period before the discussion begins.
finally, and this might be an obvious point... but this isnt the type of film
that works well with a "pizza party" or "movie snacks" type of screening.
after the first 10 seconds of the film, no one in the room will have much of
an appetite. it is sometimes helpful to have bottled water and tissues for
folks who feel ill.
all things considered... students love this film and have reported on evals
that it was, "disturbing but life changing" and "critically important for
everyone to see."
let me know if you have any other questions!

Hello,
In addition to Wendy, how many of you have screened the documentary "The
Price of Pleasure"?
Did you use the edited or full (explicit ) version? Were there any other
considerations in showing the film?
I am planning to screen this film here at Emory, but I am facing the concern
of some administrators. I would like to meet with them and show a list of
other schools that have screened this film.
Any information and feedback you can provide regarding your event would be
appreciated.
Thank you!
Aline

Hello list -
My students are looking for a movie to show for Sexual Assault
Awareness
Month. In the past we've done a week with movies and discussion every
night. This year we only have space on the calendar for one. Is there
one movie that sticks out to you as great for awareness, entertaining,
and inspires discussion?
Thanks,
Emily

Hi Aline,
We've screened Price of Pleasure several times on our campus. Our Human
Sexuality class has offered extra credit to attend, and we've facilitated a
discussion afterwards for all who could attend. I found it to be more
engaging, moving than the Anti-Porn Slideshow that we'd used previously, and
also got more discussion afterwards. I have never watched the full (explicit)
version, and I would NOT want to use that. The edited version has everything,
it's just blurry. After watching it, I (even someone who does this work
regularly) felt a little sick, and that was the edited version. I think that
the blurred out version is just a little easier to stomach.
But add University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to your list! (Oh,
also, we partnered with our sexual health educator to screen this, and that
worked pretty awesome, too. We were able to fold healthy sexuality into our
discussion of violent sexuality/mainstream pornography.)
Peace,
Ross
