Online course:
First Responders: Responding to Sexual Assault Disclosures
The Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, in collaboration with NEARI (The New
England Adolescent Research Institute), is pleased to announce the
availability of the online course:
First Responders: Responding to Sexual Assault Disclosures.
This course, designed specifically for staff in college and university
settings, presents an innovative model for responding to a disclosure of
sexual violence. It stresses the importance of a supportive response to
reduce secondary trauma and to encourage the survivor to seek further
care. The course was developed through years of providing training at
institutions of higher education throughout the Boston area. Go to
http://courses.neari.com/
to view a sample of this online course (one-minute in length).
"I thought the course was a 5. It was really amazing. I have completed
the 36-hour Rape Crisis training and worked as a counselor last year for
my MSW field work. Through this training I learned new information and
new skills. THANK YOU! Not only did I learn the importance of the SEEK
steps, but I learned how to implement them. Often a training will
provide the WHY without the HOW."

This course presents an innovative model for responding to a disclosure
of sexual violence. It stresses the importance of a supportive response
to reduce secondary trauma and to encourage the survivor to seek further
care. This approach trains staff to respond to disclosures emphasizing
four key areas: Safety, Empowerment, Empathy, and Knowledge (SEEK).
Designed specifically for staff in college and university settings, it
is an essential tool for creating a safe point of entry for anyone
choosing to disclose the sexual violence they experienced. This course
was developed by staff of the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, the
largest rape crisis center in Massachusetts and the second oldest in the
country.

Good Afternoon~
We are in the process of developing our Sexual Assault Response Team on
campus. Our campus police contacted us today to request a training for
the officers. They struggle with interviewing and handling the
survivors' questions and emotions. What training tools/programs have
others used? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
