We just had one this month as part of our Sexual
Assault Awareness Month events. The turnout was not
what we had hoped, but the men who attended were
enthusiastic. They all wore the free shirts we gave
out while they walked, which identified the cause
for which they walked and promoted the month at the
same time. Our men's group on campus, MARS (Men
Against Rape Society) purchased the red heels from
the national Walk a Mile in Her Shoes organization
(www.walkamileinhershoes.org). For 100 pairs it
cost about $2500, so that's important to consider.
For us, this was the easiest way to insure we would
have men-sized heels. You have to fill out the
appropriate request forms with the national
organization to do a march using this name.
One thing we discussed a lot in advance was how it
would be carried out and how it might be received.
We were very concerned about not trivializing the
issue of sexual assault or women's issues in
general or having onlookers think we were making a
joke of these issues. The students on our planning
committee were excited to try it and we made choices
like not having an MC to kick off the event, who
might make mockery of the men in shoes. We had a
lot of women students helping at the event, handing
out shoes & shirts and cheering the men on as they
started and finished marching. The school paper
covered it appropriately (though there were many
inaccuracies in the article). All in all, I think
it was a successful event.
