i always think of zen buddhism when faced with this work; accordingly, 
many performances (especially on you tube) seem to be missing that 
aspect of the composition: being fully present in the here and now.

sitting in a concert hall with other audience members in "silence" feels 
much different to me from watching a video by myself of several folks 
(all white men, incidentally) hanging out on my computer's video screen.

other interpretations possible (obviously).
