I'm also mystified by the sudden spate of requests to leave the list - have these people REALLY lost interest in Cage?
I can't see what would be the advantage of changing the list to a forum, but if someone could explain, I'd be interested to learn.
One query, though, which will reveal me as the techno-ignoramus I am: why are all the emails so repetitive? Scrolling down endlessly is very time-consuming and frustrating.
I'm keeping this message short because I'm aware of how many times it will appear!

Subject: [silence] How to unsubscribe from the Silence list

Unfortunately, these people are not reading the
emails that have told them how to unsubscribe
(and they don't know how a mailing list works apparently),
so you have to make it plain and simple in the subject line.
Hopefully they will now take the correct action
to unsubscribe themselves.

Here is another reminder of how it is done:

Subject: [silence] Let's go to the movies

Hi all,

After Lowell's message I would like to bring this up:

Yesterday I walked past Philip Thomas' office at Huddersfield Uni.  He has
a photo attached to his door (he has the best door-stuff) which is from the
entrance to the old Cunningham dance studio.  The photo is of a list of
'rules' that Cage put up.  The one that took me by surprise is the
exhortation to go and see as many films (movies) as you possibly can.

I never had him down as a film-buff and it's not something I've ever heard
mention of before.

Does anyone have any further information (favourite films etc)?

Hope it's not too flippant a question,

Julian

By the way, if you get an error doing this, you may be subscribed from a
different address, perhaps one that you have set to forward emails
automatically to your current one.

To find this out, look in the full headers of messages that you received
from the list for a line that begins with "Envelope-to:"
For example, mine have a line that says

Envelope-to:

If you're using Gmail, you can find see the full header by clicking on the
downward triangle next to "Reply" at the top of the message, then selecting
"Show original" from the drop-down menu that appears.

If you're using Hotmail. you can find see the full header by clicking on
the downward triangle next to "Reply" at the top of the message, then
selecting "View message source" from the drop-down menu that appears.

There's a good article at
http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2012/08/10/10-rules-for-students-and-tea
chers-john-cage-corita-kent/about
this list of rules.

According to the article, the list, while frequently attributed to Cage,
"originates from celebrated artist and educator Sister Corita
Kent<https://www.corita.org/corita-kent.html>and was created as part
of a project for a class she taught in 1967-1968.
It was subsequently appropriated as the official art department rules at
the college of LAs Immaculate Heart Convent, her alma mater, but was
commonly popularized by Cage, whom the tenth rule cites directly. Legendary
choreographer Merce Cunningham, Cages longtime partner and the love of his
life, kept a copy of it in the studio where his company rehearsed until his
death. It appears in Stewart Brands cult-classic *Essential Whole Earth
Catalog*<http://www.amazon.com/mn/search/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390
957&index=books&keywords=0385236417&linkCode=ur2&redirect=true&tag=braipick-20>
,
published in 1986, the year Kent passed away."

Hello, I'm trying to get a copy of Cage's review, Music in Aix, which was
published in the Aug. 13 issue of the *New York Herald Tribune*. I'd
appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Rob

There is something zombie-like about these useless requests in the face
of constant reiteration of the reminder that the request must be
addressed to the list server, not to the membership. "I have something
to say and I am saying it to the wrong person."
