Having seen the score, I'm not sure either though. The 'nota bene' 
explanation doesn't work because it occurs repeatedly on only a certain 
number of notes, whilst there are other muted notes without the indication. 
It looks like a particular indication aimed at the type of muting but there's 
no explanation in the score.
