NB stands for "nota bene"—"note well"—and might only be there to remind the performer that those particular pitches are to be muted and not played conventionally.

Hello,

My name is Panagiotis Sialmas. I am a third year undergraduate student at Huddersfield university. I will perform John Cage's Music for Piano 2 this coming Friday 11th. In the score Cage sometimes uses the instruction (NB) above the muted notes, but I don't know what this stands for and there are no instructions in the performance notes that explain. Can you help?

Kind regards,

Panos.
