Early 2012 this critical analysis was posted to the list:
John_Cage's_Entanglement_with_the_Ideas_of_Coomaraswamy,_Ed_Crooks_PhD_thesis
It also became irritating to me.

Yes, Richard. Watts did say this to some extent and I'm very familiar with his statement
being that I have all of the lectures and most of the books and even had a chance to meet him
in '72 (my introduction to Cage personally who was there too!)

I'm speaking about a rather recent article that I read - within the past couple of months
from a fellow of whom I cannot recall the name right now. I remember being rather irritated
by the step-by-step dismantling of Cage's understanding of Buddhism and Zen in particular.
I'll see if I can recall the author (a Japanese or Chinese fellow?) and article and post more info.

I think the fellow was Alan Watts, who may have said the Cage got Zen all wrong, to which Cage apparently replied "Does it matter?"

The whole exchange, repeated often, may be totally fiction. But I think it clearly identifies the character of both men.

Enjoying this book immensely.
I'm wondering now about another
article (mentioned here?) by a fellow
who claimed that Cage got Zen all wrong -
that he misunderstood what Zen was really about.
Of course, when someone claims to know all about
Zen, that alone can make the accusations suspect.

Thanks again,
