Our student health center will treat prophylactically for STIs with or without a disclosure of sexual assault. Our state department of health funds a voucher program that covers the cost of testing for some of the more common STIs, and out student health center honors those vouchers. Students need to pay for the cost of the treatment.

Our SANE will also provide prophylactic treatment for STIs, and are really good at working with their patients to figure out how to get as much of the cost as possible covered by the SANE payment program and victim's compensation.

Hi Alison:

We do and it used to be written into the procedures but it changed based on new technology.   See our HS person’s response below.  It worked well years ago when we started meeting with the hospital to improve the response to sexual assault victims and we invited a representative from our health services.  So when we wrote a new plan for the hospital, health services adopted similar protocols.   Our HS does not do sexual assault exams but will treat prophylactically for STI’s and followed the hospital protocol for that.  Just thinking that the protocol from the ER if they treat prophylactically may be helpful.

Response from Health Services:

The procedure I am attaching does not address the clinical care of the individual.  The testing and treatment we provide is built into our electronic health record template and is based off of guidelines from UpToDate –a evidenced based clinical decision making resource. It is a resource our providers use for current practice guidelines.

We do provide testing and treatment for STI’s and treat prophylactically following evidenced based guidelines.

Sorry we don’t have a guideline I can access to send – it is built into our EHR.

Hope you are having a great semester!

Hello everyone, I was wondering if you might be able to tell me if you any of you have health centers that treat students prophylactically for STIs who don't want to have a SAFE exam done or go to the ED? If you do and you would be will to share protocols, that would be great! Thanks so much!
