At Tulane, we have the Sexual Violence Prevention & Education Coalition (SVPEC), formed in 2014. The director of our student wellness center has been chair since its beginning, and I joined her as co-chair after my hire this winter:
  1. Currently, we have open membership that includes faculty, staff, and students; we have members from various departments and schools on campus, including athletics, fraternity/sorority life, and our student government and advocacy groups. This summer, we’re revamping our membership slightly to identify all of the student organizations, departments, and schools that we want to be at the table and then make invitations; we also will be rolling out attendance expectations for members to really show a commitment to the coalition. Finally, we identified and will extend invitations to “Visiting Members” made up of senior administrators who are welcome to attend a meeting if they are available. We don’t have an on-boarding procedure at this time, but great idea!
  2. Mission: "The mission of our coalition is to collaboratively and strategically prevent sexual violence while fostering sexual climates and cultures on campus where all feel safe, informed, and well-positioned to thrive. We also aim to enhance the effectiveness of and communication between other working groups and individuals working on initiatives related to Title IX, sexual violence prevention, rape culture and healthy sexuality.”
  3. Our focus is prevention and education; response is the focus of our Sexual Misconduct Response Team. (I’ll note that the New Orleans SART—which we are members of as well—is less of a traditional SART than a city-wide coalition; one of the subcommittee is focused on the city’s universities. It’s a fantastic group, and you can check out their work at http://www.nolasart.org.)
  4. Monthly: the second Friday of every month for an hour, though some sub-committees may meet after hours. My co-chair and I meet at least once a month to hammer out details on initiatives and projects; we also have a monthly meeting between us and our sub-committee chairs.

Our coalition has been behind the creation of a pilot campus climate survey, an annual campus-wide event where we release our sexual assault data and focus on prevention and culture change, faculty education sessions, and language about our bystander program and sexual violence for syllabi. Soon, we’ll be receiving a presidential charge to institutionalize Tulane’s commitment to our efforts. We’re really proud of the SVPEC, and I’m happy to share any additional information on our coalition!

Take care,
Meredith

We’re looking at revamping our campus coalition/task force. For those of you involved in a campus coalition/task force (and especially if you are in a faciliatator or coordinator role):

1.       What stakeholders attend? Are the meetings open or by invitation? How do you onboard new members?

2.       What is the focus of your group? Is it more about action or advising? How involved in meeting the mission are group members (do they do stuff, or just come to meetings)?

3.       Does the group focus on response, prevention, or both?

4.       How often do you meet, and for how long?

Really, any information you have to share is helpful. Thanks!
