Good morning from Brandeis University outside of Boston,
-- As we are preparing to host our annual Take Back the Night on April 4th, we wanted to reach out to colleagues to see if you have had any concerns regarding media coverage of the event, specifically on-campus newspapers/groups?
Students, specifically survivors and supporters of survivors, are stating they are hesitant to attend and participate in the event due to the on-campus media recording their statements and publishing stories in the newspaper/online available to anyone. We are a relatively smaller school, so while the media is stating they will not identify survivors, anonymity is difficult to assure on such a smaller campus so students are understandably hesitant, or stating they will not attend.
We would greatly appreciate any insight or suggestions on how to help survivors feel this is a safe space to share their story and minimize concerns of further violation of privacy and insensitivity.
Thank you very much,
Julia Rickey
