From the Front of the Room: A Survivor’s Guide to Public Speaking by the National Resource Center on Domestic Violence (NRCDV) (September 2011)

This guide provides a basic overview of the issues that face survivors who desire to speak publicly about their experiences with intimate partner violence. It provides guidance for the survivor speaker to maximize their physical and emotional safety and ensure the overall success of the speaking engagement. This guide is designed to explore the journey of sharing their story with the public.

Hello Julia,

We have been explicit with all media that they must check in with the Take Back the Night coordinator as they arrive. They are only allowed to take pictures and quote statements from the keynote speakers and invited support service guests. They are not allow to quote or take pictures of any of the participants to ensure the privacy and safety of attendees. If an attendee asks to have their picture taken they must clear that with the coordinator first.

Subject: Take Back the Night and media coverage concerns

Good morning from Brandeis University outside of Boston,

As we are preparing to host our annual Take Back the Night on April 4th, we wanted to reach out to colleagues to see if you have had any concerns regarding media coverage of the event, specifically on-campus newspapers/groups?

Students, specifically survivors and supporters of survivors, are stating they are hesitant to attend and participate in the event due to the on-campus media recording their statements and publishing stories in the newspaper/online available to anyone. We are a relatively smaller school, so while the media is stating they will not identify survivors, anonymity is difficult to assure on such a smaller campus so students are understandably hesitant, or stating they will not attend.

We would greatly appreciate any insight or suggestions on how to help survivors feel this is a safe space to share their story and minimize concerns of further violation of privacy and insensitivity.

Thank you very much,

Julia Rickey
