Position description: 

 

The primary function of the Assistant Director in the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention is to direct and oversee office programs and services designed to reduce alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and gender violence (ATODV) among students at the University of Central Missouri. This individual must have a broad knowledge base in prevention theory and a strong skill base in prevention practice.

 

The Assistant Director trains, supervises, and evaluates 4-6 program staff; trains and advises three peer education groups; coordinates the provision of tobacco cessation and alcohol or other drug motivational interviewing services; and ensures the implementation of ongoing, comprehensive awareness and educational programs on ATODV.

 

Master’s degree in the preferred majors of college student personnel, health education, public

health, and counseling. A related field will be considered. Certified Reciprocal Prevention Specialist (CRPS) or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) preferred.

 

Two years experience in the following required:

  •     Project implementation or programming.
  •       Work within the field of gender violence prevention, substance abuse prevention or related health promotion field.
  •     Public speaking, teaching or training.
  •      Student organization advising, working with groups of volunteers, or similar experience.

Experience in the following preferred:

  •        Supervision of employees
  •        Brief motivational interviewing.
  •        Social norms marketing.
  •        Bystander intervention skills training.
  •        Tobacco cessation coaching.

About the Office of Violence and Substance Abuse Prevention (VSAP):

Under the leadership of VSAP, our community has experienced a 34% decrease in underage drinking since 2008. The VSAP office has been recognized by groups such as the US Department of Education, Outside the Classroom (now Everfi), the US Department of Justice, and the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisers as a department dedicated to both innovation and evidenced-based practice. We collaborate closely with campus, local, state, and national partners, and empower students through peer engagement and internship opportunities. Recent initiatives include the Green Dot strategy for prevention of power-based personal violence, a tobacco-free campus policy initiatives, a marijuana mythbusters campaign designed to help non-users continue their decision to abstain, and a project with the nearby US Air Force base to reduce underage drinking among airmen through the use of environmental management strategies.
