Happy 2015!

While I cannot speak to several names/programs mentioned, I respectfully disagree with the comments related to Sex Signals. I would highly recommend Catharsis Productions.

We’ve used the program at Saint Mary’s College for over 10 years. Content did change slightly about 2 years ago. For one, it now has a component promoting bystander intervention, although it is not a significant portion of the program.

The title is somewhat misleading, as we all know that sexual assault is not about the miscommunication of signals. I think they do a great job using humor, but, more importantly, break things down in the facilitation. As a side note, we also show the program to parents of incoming students and this dialogue is the most interesting. The program addresses how men and women are socialized, emphasizes the importance of consent, and places a great deal of emphasis on perpetration. While I can’t recall details from years prior, Lisak’s research was specifically cited in the discussion portion of the program this past August.

If anyone has specific questions, I'd be willing to share our experience one-on-one as well.

Peace,

Connie

I agree with Juliette’s assessment of Sex Signals – from what I’ve seen of the program, it portrays rape as a result of miscommunication, not predatory behavior. Based on what I have seen of it, I would not recommend it.

I have to say that I've had many concerns about the sex signals program.  They may have changed, so please correct me if they have, but while their approach is very engaging, I find their message to be very dangerous.  Specifically that they focus on rape being primarily a miscommunication.  This of course gets us back to rape myths, puts the responsibility of rape and its prevention on women/survivors and also completely minimizes the accountability of the perp and essentially dismisses lisaks research and all we know about perp intentionality...

Again, maybe their messaging has changed, but this was certainly happening last year.

Hi, Katie,

We had Sex Signals from Catharsis Productions do a program during Freshman Orientation last fall.  They were great and it was very well received.  Here is the link:  http://www.catharsisproductions.com/index.php?intro=no.  This page gives you examples of the performance.  It is a male and female act and they engage the audience.

The 2 prior years we contracted with Tamika Hall (very good speaker) and Tim Collins (an actor who does wonderful drama regarding sexual assault prevention).  Here is their contact info:   andhttp://timcollinsonline.com/.  The performance Tim did was called The Script.  You can see some of it here:http://timcollinsonline.com/portfolio-item/the-script/.  Tamika was focusing on dating violence and sexual assault a couple of years ago, but her current videos seem to indicate she is going in a different direction currently.

Hope this helps.

Good afternoon,

I am writing to see if you could share your experience with groups/programs that you have hired for large scale sexual violence prevention/education programs that could be offered to students auditorium-style during orientation or welcome week.

Thank you,

Katie Dalton
