Hello all--
I don't have any experience with the large-scale programs already noted to be able to offer comment (U-M uses a different approach in our prevention programming), but one thing to keep in mind as we're all in the planning stages for 2015's school year programming is that VAWA regulations require that campuses deliver primary prevention programming with specific content including (from the regs):

(aa) A statement that the institution of higher education prohibits the offenses of dating violence,
domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking;
(bb) The definition of dating violence, domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking in the
applicable jurisdiction;
(cc) The definition of consent, in reference to sexual activity, in the applicable jurisdiction;
(dd) Safe and positive options for bystander intervention that may be carried out by an individual
to prevent harm or intervene when there is a risk of dating violence, domestic violence,
sexual assault, or stalking against a person other than such individual;
(ee) Information on risk reduction to recognize warning signs of abusive behavior and how
to avoid potential attacks; and
(ff) The information in clauses (ii) through (vii).

Additionally, institutions must be able to demonstrate that the program they are providing be:
"culturally relevant, inclusive of diverse communities and identities, sustainable, responsive to community needs, and informed by research or assessed for value, effectiveness, or outcome" (italics mine).

As we're all considering  programs to purchase or speakers to bring to campus, one helpful vetting question could be: "what research is your program based on or informed by and how do you assess its effectiveness." The answers to these questions can then be added to your Clery compliance data and also shared with stakeholders on campus and included in your comprehensive prevention plans..

The proposed rules can be found here:
http://ifap.ed.gov/fregisters/attachments/FR062014.pdf

The final regulations that note any changes to the proposed rules, along with discussion associated with the development of the regulations can be found here:

Hello all,

Here are two program options that are unconventional, but have solid responses with students for that
very same reason.

1) Guante (spoken word poetry that attracts diverse students and reaches males)

"Action"

Guante website

2) Laci Green (recently inked a deal with MTV and has over a million YouTube subscribers)

At Virginia Commonwealth University, we used Guante during our 2014 orientation and packed the room
with 300 people. This coming year we are considering Laci Green given her passion for feminism and
inclusion, connection to popular culture, and loyal internet/wired following.

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks,

I agree with Juliette’s assessment of Sex Signals – from what I’ve seen of the program, it portrays rape as a result of miscommunication, not predatory behavior. Based on what I have seen of it, I would not recommend it.

I have to say that I've had many concerns about the sex signals program.  They may have changed, so please correct me if they have, but while their approach is very engaging, I find their message to be very dangerous.  Specifically that they focus on rape being primarily a miscommunication.  This of course gets us back to rape myths, puts the responsibility of rape and its prevention on women/survivors and also completely minimizes the accountability of the perp and essentially dismisses lisaks research and all we know about perp intentionality...

Again, maybe their messaging has changed, but this was certainly happening last year.

Hi, Katie,

We had Sex Signals from Catharsis Productions do a program during Freshman Orientation last fall.  They were great and it was very well received.  Here is the link:  http://www.catharsisproductions.com/index.php?intro=no.  This page gives you examples of the performance.  It is a male and female act and they engage the audience.

The 2 prior years we contracted with Tamika Hall (very good speaker) and Tim Collins (an actor who does wonderful drama regarding sexual assault prevention).  Here is their contact info:   andhttp://timcollinsonline.com/.  The performance Tim did was called The Script.  You can see some of it here:http://timcollinsonline.com/portfolio-item/the-script/.  Tamika was focusing on dating violence and sexual assault a couple of years ago, but her current videos seem to indicate she is going in a different direction currently.

Hope this helps.

Good afternoon,

I am writing to see if you could share your experience with groups/programs that you have hired for large scale sexual violence prevention/education programs that could be offered to students auditorium-style during orientation or welcome week.

Thank you,

Katie Dalton
