Hello everyone,

I use this video for classes small enough where I can have a discussion.  I preface it with "tell me what you think is realistic and what you think is unrealistic."  Then I watch their faces as the video progresses (if only I could get my observations down on paper).  This is has lead to great discussions with the students. Often to the point where they are correcting each other.

However, I did find that when discussing the second half, many students did not notice some of the details during the first half, such as how the male was expressing interest in the female at the party and she was rejecting him or how the male was not drinking as much at the bar, etc., which led for me to explain or rewind certain pieces.  I hope you find this information helpful.

Wishing you well and grateful for this listserve.

Sincerely,

Thank you, Wade, for sending this to us.  I just had an opportunity to watch it.  Until I got to the last 2 minutes, I was cringing, anticipating all the opportunities for victim-blaming that I feared would come from students.  In the end, I felt relief and was pleased with the way appropriate bystander behavior was modeled here.  However, I think when I use it (and I plan to), I will most likely do some front-loading, before showing it.  Something like taking a poll “How many of you belief that a woman deserves to be raped (or is asking for it), if she gets wasted when she’s out at a bar or at a party”.  Assuming most will vote “no”, I would hope to circumvent some of that reaction and be able to focus on the bystander aspects of the video.

Just thought I would put that out there.

First of all I’d like to thank everyone that sent me links and information about bystander intervention programs. I am still trying to get back to people individually to thank them.

Secondly, if anyone attended the SCOPE webinar today, it was excellent and well worth it. It generated a lot of good conversations

Thirdly, a colleague sent me this link to a video the New Zealand government published about Bystander Intervention at colleges and universities there. The basic theme is, there are many occasions leading up to a completed sexual assault, when numerous people in the survivor’s life could have intervened. It’s about 7 minutes long but very well done and I plan to show it at future programs here.
