“What about women’s violence against men?  Why not just be against all violence?”  Both really common questions, actually.  I’d love to hear others’ thoughts on this, but here are mine.

1.       You’re right.  Let’s be against all violence.  Since this is a column about the Violence Against Women Act, it’s a good chance to remind folks that VAWA provides resources and protection for *all* victims.  Always has and always will.  This includes male victims – hetero, gay, black, white, tall, short.  Every shelter for battered women I’ve ever worked at has provided resources and support to people of all genders – even if the shelter had “women” in the title.

2.       Since the vast majority of sexual violence, strangulation, domestic murder, stalking, domestic violence etc. is men’s violence against women, I think those of us in the “perpetrating group” have a responsibility to speak up against it, and against *men’s violence against women* in particular.

What do others think?

P.S. Since you said you’re “new to this,” I want to say “welcome!”  This movement is absolutely wonderful, and I’m glad you got here.

Men against violence is against all violence; white to black, black to white, tall to short, short to tall, men to women;
Does this ending the violence include woman's violence against men??  http://www.csulb.edu/~mfiebert/assault.htm

If violence begets violence then all violence must be stopped so it does not escalate?

I am new to this so I may be asking dumb questions; thanks for you explanation.

Today is FRATERNITY DAY for the pledge to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA)! If you're in a fraternity (or you're a fraternity alum), please sign and forward to your brothers – get the whole fraternity chapter to sign!  If you know someone who is active in the Greek system, please ask him/her to sign and forward.

We're 3% of the way to our goal!  If you’ve signed the pledge already, thank you very much for doing so!  If you’ve already signed another petition supporting VAWA reauthorization, thank you!  You can sign this one as well, or forward it to men you know and ask them to sign.

Please sign, forward, post on Facebook, etc.  Once we reach our goal, the signatures will be delivered to Congress, which will help in the VAWA reauthorization efforts.  Also, read the post on Ms. Magazine Online:

Thank you!  Until the violence stops,
