We did a survey (n = 141) on our campus this summer to try and gauge students’ feelings about student boards and found the following:

When asked their comfort level with the possibility of different bodies hearing cases, 67.5% of participants were “slightly” to “not at all” comfortable with the student-led Honor Court (only 23% were “moderately” to “extremely” comfortable.” In contrast, 12% were “slightly” or “not at all” comfortable with a (hypothetical) separate Sexual Misconduct Committee (and 79% were “moderately” or “extremely” comfortable with being heard by a separate Sexual Misconduct Committee).

When asked the same question about hearing bodies, but given information describing the composition of each hearing body instead of using the names “Student Grievance Committee or “Sexual Assault Misconduct Committee”:

-28% were “moderately” to “extremely” comfortable with trained student members of the Honor Court only

-48% were “moderately” to “extremely” comfortable with faculty, staff, and members of student government

-65% were “moderately” to “extremely” comfortable with faculty and staff only

These findings students are generally more comfortable with faculty and staff hearing cases and less comfortable with students hearing cases, especially if the hearing body consists only of students.

Subject: Research Question - peer review boards as deterrent?

Dear Colleagues,

Does anyone know of any research articles specifically addressing the impact of peer conduct boards on survivor reporting or willingness to go through the conduct process? I was asked to provide some research beyond anecdotal data and survivor testimonies as to the negative impact peer review boards can have on survivor reporting.

Thanks!

Lisa
