We have organized training for staff around the goals of teaching them to:

Believe
Refer
Report

Believe means getting everyone on the same page around what interpersonal violence is using a combination of presentation and interactive activities.  We also are very clear about the employee role which is not to counsel, investigate, or otherwise "fix" the situation but rather to create an environment where the student feels safe and believed, and link them as quickly as possible to services.

Refer means teaching employees what resources are available and how to access them quickly and effectively.  We encourage employees to walk the student to our Health and Counseling program and or to call an advocate.

Report All employees must report what they know to USM Public Safety.  We teach employees how to inform students of this obligation and to assure them that Public Safety will do their utmost to protect their privacy and safety as well as that of the campus as a whole.

The trickiest part thus far has been around Relationship Violence as the continuum of behavior is so broad.  We have recommended employees call a specific person if they are uncertain if a situation rises to the level of requiring a report be made.

Hope this helps!

Hello Colleagues,

I am looking for methods to enhance training and education for our
faculty and staff at Saint Mary's College. This training would target
individuals who may witness the impact of violence on students or have
students disclose experiences to them. However, providing support is not
a primary responsibility within their positions. I would like the
training to increase the knowledge base of participants as well as teach
basic intervention skills.

If you have materials you have found beneficial for your campuses or
recommendations for programming models, please send them my way.

Thanks in advance!

Peace,
Connie
