The University of Michigan's Division of Student Affairs seeks an experienced
professional to provide leadership to the campus Sexual Assault Prevention
and Awareness Center.
Basic Function: As a leader within the Division of Student Affairs, the
Director of SAPAC is responsible for the planning, development, and
implementation of primary prevention, crisis intervention, advocacy and
referral programs and services related to sexual and intimate partner
violence for the campus community. The Director is charged with developing
comprehensive campus-wide activities, relationships and partnerships that
combat sexual and intimate partner violence at the University of Michigan.
The Director develops and implements vision and long-term planning for SAPAC
that is consistent with comprehensive, and culturally-competent education and
service delivery systems. The Director provides supervision and oversight to
six full time staff, six paid student coordinators and three to four unpaid
graduate interns in field placements at SAPAC through the UM School of Social
Work.
Responsibilities:
1. Primary Prevention and Education (25%)
1. Utilize evidence-based best practices drawing from primary
prevention, feminist empowerment, men's involvement, risk reduction and
applied educational theater theories, to develop, lead, and implement
comprehensive, innovative sexual and intimate partner violence prevention
programming for all students.
2. Provide training for student volunteer programs, including Peer
Education, Networking/ Publicity/Activism, and Men's Activism.
3. Oversee the annual provision of sexual and intimate partner violence
prevention and awareness programs within campus residence halls,
fraternities, sororities, and other student organizations and communities.
4. Collaborate with University Health Services (UHS) staff on the
annual implementation of on line Community Matters course for incoming first
year students.
5. Provide direction and staffing support to annual focus on sexual and
intimate partner violence prevention within Office of New Student Programs
(ONSP) student and parent orientation programs.
1. Advocacy, Crisis Intervention and Referral (25%)
1. Develop, lead, and implement comprehensive advocacy, crisis
intervention, and referral programs and services related to sexual and
intimate partner violence for all students.
2. Provide comprehensive institutional-wide advocacy services for sexual
and intimate partner violence survivors.
3. Provide 24/7 sexual and intimate partner violence expertise and
back-up support to professionally-staffed crisis line and in-office crisis
intervention programs. Exercise professional judgment and specialized
knowledge in assisting clients in navigating the larger, community-wide
system of sexual and intimate partner violence services.
4. Ensure advocacy and crisis intervention services are culturally aware
and sensitive to the needs of under-served populations.
5. Collaborate effectively with other campus critical incident support
service providers within University Housing, Counseling and Psychological
Services (CAPS), Dean of Students, Office of Student Conflict Resolution
(OSCR), University Health Service, various academic service units, Department
of Public Safety(DPS), and the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS).
6. Develop effective referral procedures for directing non-student
survivors to appropriate community partner agencies for services and support.
1. Development of Campus and Community Partnerships (20%)
1. Develop collaborative partnerships with campus departments and
community agencies to assist in the promotion of the educational programs and
services offered by SAPAC.
2. Develop, lead, and implement consultation, referral, and education
and training services for faculty and staff partners who serve as referral
agents for students.
3. Provide leadership to University units and departments to develop
and implement staff training programs and provide consultation and
information concerning appropriate response to sexual and intimate partner
violence issues.
4. Represent SAPAC to student groups, University operating units and
academic departments, as well as community organizations.
5. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key
University offices, including but not limited to: Dean of Students,
Department of Public Safety, University of Michigan Health System, Office of
Student Conflict Resolution, Counseling and Psychological Services,
University Health Services, and University Housing.
6. Develop and maintain effective working partnerships with key
community agencies including but not limited to: Safe House Center, City of
Ann Arbor including Ann Arbor Police Department, City Council, and
Prosecutor's office.
1. Administration and Program Management (20%)
1. Maintain professional knowledge base including relevant theory,
research, and best practices to determine appropriate applications at the
University.
2. Develop strategic plans and long- and short-term goals for SAPAC.
3. Develop, plan, and implement policies and procedures for SAPAC.
4. Ensure compliance with University policies as well as federal,
state, and local legal requirements and professional/ethical standards
pertaining to the work of SAPAC, including but not limited to federal Crime
Victim's Act of 2004.
5. Support the University's compliance with University policies as well
as federal, state and local legal requirements pertaining to sexual and
intimate partner violence including but not limited to the federal Clery Act.
6. Develop appropriate infrastructure for tracking service delivery
while maintaining commitment to client confidentiality.
7. Convene and facilitate the SAPAC advisory committee and other
advisory bodies created for special projects.
8. Manage public relations through communication and change management
strategies and planning.
9. Direct the preparation of special and periodic reports as well as
descriptive materials publicizing services, programs, and activities of the
department.
10. Assess unit resource needs; develop and recommend annual unit and
project budgets.
11. Monitor income and expenses and adjust expenditures to meet budget
goals.
12. Identify and secure grant funding for collaborative research related to
sexual and intimate partner violence prevention, education, and services.
Collaborate in Division of Student Affairs development efforts.
13. Execute and manage complete operation of research, programmatic
surveys, and grants received.
14. Determine staff requirements including staffing levels and
competencies. Select, hire, and ensure training of new and existing staff
and provide oversight for the implementation of graduate internship programs.
15. Provide performance management for staff including work planning,
professional development, coaching and feedback, and performance appraisals.
Recommend salaries and recognition for staff.
1. Division of Student Affairs and Campus-Wide Responsibilities (10%)
1. Provide leadership, support, consultation and guidance to Division
of Student Affairs units and campus partners on responding to issues of
sexual and intimate partner violence.
2. Represent the Division of Student Affairs on campus-wide committees,
councils, and task forces.
3. Support or lead appropriate Division of Student Affairs goal
implementation efforts as delegated at the division and unit levels in
service to the University and divisional mission and vision.
4. Participate in the Division of Student Affairs Leadership Assembly.
5. Serve as a divisional spokesperson on issues relevant to SAPAC and
sexual and intimate partner violence.
Supervision Received: Supervision is provided by the Associate Vice President
of Student Affairs/Dean of Students.
Supervision Exercised: Functional and administrative supervision of all
professional and support staff.
Qualifications:
1. Master's degree required; Ph.D. or terminal degree in related field
preferred.
2. Specialized knowledge and experience in providing primary
prevention, crisis intervention and advocacy services for survivors of
domestic and sexual and intimate partner violence.
3. Experience working with college student survivors and demonstrated
knowledge of student development theory.
4. Well developed leadership, management, administrative, conflict
resolution, team building and supervisory skills.
5. Experience with effective management of fiscal resources. Grant
writing and other fundraising experience desired.
6. Knowledge of assessment, evaluation, and research methodologies,
especially related to learning outcomes, learning environments, and program
evaluation.
7. Experience working with diverse and under-served student and staff
populations. Knowledge of multicultural organizational development and
intercultural maturity theories desired.
8. Experience building and sustaining dynamic collaborative working
relationships with wide range of campus and community partners.
9. Strong oral and written communication skills and experience with
public speaking.
