Thanks for the feedback! My feelings were very similar and so I wanted to see where others stood. In the coming days, we are going to be launching a short YouTube video discussion on the movie to help make more people aware.

Mike,

You raise an extremely important question and I am grateful that you asked.
First, let me encourage anyone who sees the movie and has not read the book
"Push" by Sapphire which the movie is based on, to please do so.

As Mike stated in his description of the movie, it is poignant, portrays a
life full of abuse - emotional, physical and sexual, and presumably, a life
of overcoming this abuse.

In response to your direct question, Mike, my focus was more so on the fact
that the mother "says" she hated and was abusive to her child - and
grandchild - because of the abuse that occurred by her husband to her
daughter. Victim-blaming never once came to my mind and after reflecting on
your question this morning, I still don't consider this to be a portrayal of
victim blaming. She admits to being fully present and allowing the abuse of
her child to continue for her own pleasure.

It is a heavy issue. I think the biggest lesson I walked away with and to
share with my classes - is the generational threat that occurs when abuse is
not stopped within families. Because of the fathers decision to be abusive,
the mother was abusive not only to her daughter but to her granddaughter and
had the potential to cause her daughter to become abusive and so on and so
forth. The cycle of abuse is what I will be discussing.

Subject: [Prevent-Connect] The movie "Precious"

Have you seen the movie "Precious"? I did this past weekend. Very
powerful drama dealing with multiple forms of abuse (including sexual
abuse). The question I have is how everyone feels about the Social
Worker asking the Mother how she could allow her male partner to
sexually abuse her daughter over the years?

As we all know, scenes such as this one are often blaming the mother
for what the perpetrator did. In this movie, the situation is even
more complicated because the mother herself is abusive toward the
daughter (character named Precious is the daughter). How do you plan
on discussing this movie in classes and/or educational settings?
