I speak to all incoming first-year and transfer students as part of
orientation for about 20 minutes as part of a larger session on the
"Carolina Way," which includes academic honesty and our Honor Code,
alcohol use, and sexual assault.  It ends with an interactive theater
piece on diversity.  While I don't think a one-time program is enough,
it's a great start, and whenever I do programs on campus, they
remember me as the guy from orientation.

In my brief time (with groups of ~200-300), I do an interactive
exercise about what men do and what women do to protect themselves
from sexual assault.  It's an effective and eye-opening exercise that
helps them to see that although not all women are sexually assaulted,
all women experience the THREAT of sexual assault and organize their
lives around it.  It also helps illuminate the myth that most assaults
are from strangers and shows them that we tend to put the burden on
women (and then blame them afterward). We end that activity by
pointing out that although most perps are men, most men aren't perps,
and that men have something to gain by working against assault b/c
they care about women AND because men are also assaulted. I'm tweaking
the activity this year so it is more inclusive of students who don't
identify with the gender binary.  For those who don't know the
exercise, I'm happy to share it (email me off list).  We then talk
briefly about some stats, some definitions of assault and consent,
talk about alcohol, and end with campus resources.  It's a lot for 20
mins, but it seems to go well, and I had as many male- as
female-identified students come up and thank me afterward, so I think
it's good given the 20-min limitation.
