Degree and area of specialization:
Masters Degree or higher in public health, health care administration,
student or community development or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1. Minimum of eight years of progressively increasing professional experience
in a health care, student or community development organization with
demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, organizational, communication and
problem-solving skills and strong partnering skills with organizational
leaders and campus partners. At least three years, should be at a senior
administrative level of responsibility.
2. Proven record in grant management and procurement
3. Proven record in development, implementation and evaluation of public
health and prevention programs
4. Previous experience in a college/student health service preferred.
Principal duties:
The Director for Prevention Services is a leadership position at University
Health Services (UHS), the student health service at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. The position has direct supervisory responsibility for a
prevention services staff of 24 FTE in five units including Health
Communications, Campus Community Partnerships, Academic Partnerships, the
Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Prevention Resources, and Environmental Health.
This position, working in collaboration with other UHS Directors and the UHS
Executive Director, is expected to develop and manage programs and
initiatives that support the UHS overarching mission of promoting students¿
academic and personal success through an integrated model of clinical,
counseling and public health prevention activities and services. The
Prevention Services Director is expected to lead interdisciplinary UHS
initiatives addressing the needs of the UW-Madison campus on issues such as
high risk alcohol use, wellness, and campus mental health through
collaboration with campus and community partners. The position is the chief
UHS representative on campus and community health and prevention policy,
serving on campus committees, work groups, and councils convened by the
UW-System, the City of Madison, Dane County and the State of Wisconsin. The
Prevention Services Director oversees all aspects of UHS communications and
media relations. The position is expected to actively seek and obtain outside
sources of program support through grant funding or other mechanisms. The
Prevention Services Director advances a respectful and healthy work
environment for a diverse work force and actively promotes affirmative action
goals as appropriate. The position requires strong leadership and
communication skills, experience in directing and supervising staff,
expertise in prevention and public health program development,
implementation, and evaluation, knowledge of campus and public health issues,
and experience with all aspects of grant funded programs. Duties are
performed under the general supervision of, and the position reports to the
Executive Director of University Health Services.
Position Summary:
40% Administer UHS Prevention Services Programs.
1. Supervise staff
2. Oversee grant development, direction, and administration
3. Develop and monitor program budget
4. Assist managers with the development and implementation of program based
strategic plans
5. Oversee unit managers hiring of new staff members including conducting
interviews, contacting references, and determining staffing needs.
20% Develop Interdisciplinary Program and Policy Initiatives within UHS
1. Coordinate an integrated UHS approach to address high-risk alcohol use
among UW-Madison students
2. Coordinate interdisciplinary approaches to issues that affect the health
and wellbeing of UW-Madison students
3. Oversee campus-wide student health and wellness surveys and the creation
of programs to promote healthy behavioral norms
4. Oversee the management of the internal and external UHS identity to
enhance communication with media, faculty, students, UHS staff and other UHS
stakeholders.
20% Serve as chief UHS representative on prevention program and policy
through collaboration with campus and community partners.
1. Collaborate with campus interdisciplinary groups, university departments
and individual campus units to develop new coalitions and relationships to
enhance the development of campus-wide programs and services supporting
prevention and public health activities
2. Represent UHS and the university on prevention related program and policy
development work groups, task forces, and councils convened
20% Serve on UHS Executive Level Management Team
1. Evaluate and modify policies and procedures as needed, according to
current standards of medical care. Implement current or new policies
regarding staff activities and monitor for adherence, usefulness and
effectiveness.
2. Collaborate with other UHS Directors services to assess patient and client
care activities at UHS, and identify areas for improvement.
3. Participates in strategic planning, resources allocation
4. Lead strategic program and policy analysis review on selected topics, as
determined by the Executive Director.
5. Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities at UHS
6. Participate in UHS committees and workgroups as requested.
7. Represent the division within the UW-Madison campus, Madison community,
and local, regional, and national professional organizations.
8. Carry out other duties as assigned by Executive Director
