Dear Chris -
Thank you for your message. Your point is a VERY important one so I
wanted to make sure to explain this to other folks who likely had the
same thought. Making the video was the final project for half of the
students in my class. They did everything on their own, including
writing the script, casting themselves, and filming. I didn't see
anything until the last day of class when they presented it and when I
saw that Rod chose to be the "sketchy guy" I had the same response! It
was a tough situation because they were so unbelievably proud of
themselves, (rightfully so), and all of them individually talked about
how they chose their roles and were happy with them. I did not choose
to address this with them since they are such a tight-knit group and Rod
really expressed loving being a part of it. What I will do is make sure
to address that stereotype with classes that I show it to, so as to make
sure that point is addressed. I always share that white men are the most
common perpetrators of sexual violence in workshops, so again, this is a
good learning opportunity.
Also, Rod is the kind of guy on campus that everyone knows and loves
and is in a lot of social circles speaking out against this violence and
facilitating workshops, so it is also good that he is a real person on
our campus that is clearly only acting.
Thanks so much for bringing this up, and please email me any other
thoughts/questions about this.
Thanks for all of the wonderful feedback I have received!
Juliette

Juliette,
I love the name of the group and it looks like they are doing great
work!! The messages in the video are wonderful...have you received any
feedback from the first-year students yet? I'd be interested to hear how
they respond...
I also wonder if there was any discussion among your peers about having
the black man play the role of the "perp" rather than the bystander in
the video. It seems in our culture where black men are seen as the
stereotypical perp, that could be a damaging message to reinforce...did
they discuss this? Do you know?
Thanks!
Chris

Subject: Bystander Intervention Training Video
Hello all -
My wonderful peer educators created this short video teaching
bystander
intervention skills. It is being shown to all incoming first-year
students on our campus for orientation. I am so proud of them - they
have done such an incredible job. I welcome any thoughts/feedback and
also welcome you to use as a tool for your campuses or future
programs.
