Heather McDonald has been on talk radio talking about her recent writings. She is getting major publicity. Last week while I was traveling, my office called saying, "You can't believe what this person was saying on the local radio station, Mike. She was pretty much implying rape on campus doesn't happen." That radio interview was Heather McDonald.

you know,

I read her letters and i seriously laugh out loud because they are so
unbelievably ridiculous (of course I cry too because it truly hurts my
core).  The most obvious message from her articles is that she has
absolutely NO experience working a day in her life with any woman or
survivor of any abuse.  It's amazing that this stuff gets published - it
just shows how you do not need to have a bit of experience actually
working with people to get published - in our culture it's the PhD's and
xyz's that are valued... She clearly does not understand patriarchy,
feminism, and absolutely believes that men by nature rape (great message
to send to men), and so women are responsible for stopping it (not that
she actually believes they are being raped anyway!).  It is truly
ludicrous.

Just as I start writing letters in response to her garbage, I stop
myself because it is an absolute waste of time - and I say this as a
VERY bust activist - always writing letters to everyone and everything.
Of course the hard part is that someone out there reads this and
actually believes it because it feeds into societal stereotypes.  But I
truly wish that we in the movement almost did not respond at all to her
and instead launched some kind of great national campaign on campuses -
not that those of us on campus aren't doing this already-every single
day.  My hope is that it is only a select population of people read this
(kind of like those that read journal articles), and that we on campus
can use this article to educate our students about the myths out there
that are perpetuated by "well-educated" people.  Maybe that is the best
use.  I hate the thought of spending a moment of my life responding to
her ridiculousness.

I don't know how she goes to sleep at night - she should be ashamed of
herself...

"It's so liberating and important for men to understand that they can
actually be friendly to women instead of playing some gender-specific
role, and that women are in most ways the same as they are. I think that
lots of women already know that, but not so many guys do."  -my dad
