I viewed the video, but was very disappointed in it. As I viewed it, it
made me angry and sad on many levels. I think the reporter/bad guy should
have done some in-depth debriefing with the men around him, because now,
they and the bystanders around them are left to think that this kind of
behavior is acceptable.
I also have problems with the drink testers. They are not scientific and do
not work. One of the State Sexual Assault Coalitions has written a position
statement to that effect.
Another troubling element for me is that the piece shifts the blame on women
to "watch their drink", instead of on men to not rape. It would have taken
very little effort for Dateline to interview Men Can Stop Rape, or one of
the other fantastic organizations that does education with men on bystander
behavior- so why didn't they?
Also, was the bartender around and did she/he hear what the reporter's
intent was? What responsibility does a bartender have? This and other
questions could have been the focus of the report, but instead, Dateline
took the "Woman Beware" approach which is risk reduction, not primary
prevention.
If we are to use this kind of clip in the classroom, I guess I would be
concerned about the messages we are unintentionally and intentionally
sending to students.
