Hey y'all,
  I remember some discussion about the drink coasters some time back.
These coasters were supposed to only measure GHB, but I believe that
some of them were found to be hoaxes. I did some reading on the drink
detective, which seems like it is actually scientifically based and
seems to have the proof to show that it works (and more importantly -
when it works). You can read about it at

  But I think that offering items like this to our campuses raises some
deeper ethical questions. Is it useful to do this? Does it create a
false sense of security when alcohol (which the Drink Detective does NOT
test for) is the most widely used date rape drug? Are we simply throwing
up our hands in the face of drug-facilitated rape, and putting the
responsibility of the victim once again? 
  And I also wonder why we don't have many conversations about how the
same attitudes around alcohol correlate to the attitudes of men who use
date rape drugs. What would it look like if we were to interrogate WHY
men use these, HOW their peers react when they find out, and WHAT would
deter them from this option? Or should we prepare for the inevitable? 
  I believe that the Drink Detective is the best thing I've seen so far,
but how messed up is it for us to give all women (or women & men) on our
campuses these items to make them test for drugs in their drinks? Is it
actually beneficial/helpful for us to do it? I don't know. What do other
folks think?
