Hi, all!

Would be interested to hear any perspectives on this....

Hello, my name is Meagan Tannehill. I am employed in the Office of
Women's Program and Studies at Colorado State University and am
currently working on an upcoming training for our campus Victim's
Assistance Team.  Our advocates respond to calls that range from joining
victim's at the hospital immediately after an assault to counseling a
survivor whose past experience has been recently been triggered.  VAT
advocates are on a rotating 24-hour on-call basis, and as we enter the
2005 training session, I have a few questions that I am hoping you may
assist me in answering.

Specifically, we have had a number of male applicants that will undergo
training, but are in the process of determining whether we should have
male advocates on call. Our main concern lies with a female victim's
reaction and comfort level in speaking with and being counseled by a
male advocate. We know that some agencies have moved towards having men
on call, but as of right now, our policy is still one of only women on
call.

Have you any male advocates within your organization?

What, if any, are your policies/thoughts/suggestions on this issue?

Finally, how do we effectively respond to, serve and include transgender
people when we have policies indicating that only women can be on call?

Your perspective and advice are greatly appreciated, as well as your
time.

Please email your responses to Meagan Tannehill at

Thank you so much for any assistance you may offer.

Sincerely,

Meagan Tannehill
