I wonder whether the "first six weeks" are not the riskiest, but
rather, later on, second year, when students have "learned" to do
more drinking--which we all know is highly associated with sexual
assault.
Our data at Western Michigan University show that students drink
more in the second year than the first.
Here's what we found about sexual assault by year in school.
We administered the National College Health Assessment tool
(developed by Amer Coll Health Assoc).
The classes in which we admin. it were male & female, and included
students at all undergrad levels, so we could analyze data by year
in school. Total sample 1,400
The question asked:
Within the last school year, have you experienced:
Attempted sexual penetration (vaginal, oral, or anal intercourse)
against your will?
Sexual penetration (ditto) against your will?
The percentages refer to both men and women saying "yes" to rape or
attempted rape:
1st year: 3.3%
2nd year: 4.6%
3rd year: 2.5%
4th year: 3.3%
5th year: 1.3%
The above survey was done in March, at which point the 1st year
students had been in college 7 months.
It is interesting to compare the above 3.3% of 1st year students
who say they have been assaulted in "last school year" with what we
found for entering students, when the questionnaire was administered
before their first year had begun (in other words, the time frame
refers to their last year in highschool):
females: 3.6% Total sample: 700
Males: 0.9%
Total: 4.5%
Of course, who knows if this "pattern" will hold the next time we
do the survery, which we do plan to.

I have found the "red zone" to be supported by Mary P. Koss' study included
in Robin Warshaw's "I Never Called It Rape." I unfortunately have also found
it to ring true in my Clery act data collection.
Sorry I can't cite the page number, it has been checked out of our library.
