In response to the question about the stat that the riskiest time of the
year for sexual assaults is the first six weeks:
I have an article from a conference that states: "College students are
the most vulnerable to rape during the first few weeks of the freshman
and sophomore years." It is cited in the endnotes as Ostrander and
Schwartz (1994); Shcwartz and Dekeseredy (1997). It goes on to say: "In
fact, the first few days of the freshman years are the riskiest,
limiting the value of any rape prevention programs that begin after
that. Research has shown that rapes of college women tend to occur
after 9 p.m., and the majority occur after midnight." This is cited as
Fisher, Cullen and Turner (2000). The article was written by Rana
Sampson.
Hope this is useful.

I was at a lecture, the first time I heard that the majority of campus
sexual
assault (as well as the majority of all other violent campus crime)
happens
in the first six weeks of college. Since then I know I've read
statistical
reports that confirm that's still true but I could not find a citation
for you. I
know that the Chronicle of Higher Education has been doing an annual
report
ever since the Clery Act was first passed. I don't have a member id to
get onto
their site but perhaps one of the other listserv readers is a
subscriber.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help -- Alice Vachss

The Clery Act statistics woulden't allow one to do an analysis of
exactly
when crimes occur, and the Chronicle of Higher Education hasn't
attempted to
do so.
On individual campuses the Clery Act crime log is supposed to offer this
type of information, but it would only include crimes reported to the
police
or security department and not other offices such as the dean of
students.
The best way to capture this information is going to be a victimization
survey.

Hi All,
I did this search last year and was unable to find any published studies
verifying the "red zone". In my search, the publications that mention it
cited articles that did not ultimately contain any such research. There
are a couple of scholars at BU that confirmed increased risk of sexual
assault in the first few weeks of school last year, but that was only a
preliminary study and they will replicate it with a larger sample before
they publish anything.
