What about peer-to-peer education, where men are actively involved as a part
of the solution, as well as educational materials that help men relate to
the trauma of sexual assault, and understand that it could be their sister,
or girlfriend?
This is the approach that SOC is encouraging, and actively involved in
developing. We've honored the Tulane Men Against Rape group as well as the
One In Four Walk Across America group with the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety
Award in recent years for just this type of approach.
We also offer the "Breaking The Silence" video which is designed to help
demonstrate to men the extent of the trauma that sexual assault can inflict
on women that they care about, such as their sisters and girlfriends. We now
include with this video a study guide helped developed in-part by one of
your graduate students Laura Wray to help increase this impact.
Students also need to know that if they report an assault they will be
treated with dignity and respect, this needs to be made clear from the top.
It also needs to be made clear from the top that campus rape will NOT be
tolerated, and strong student judicial action taken against those found
responsible needs to be publicized (with or without naming names) so that
students will know this isn't just rhetoric.
I hope these observations are helpful.
