Hi All,
I finally have a moment to share the results of my long ago request for red-zone materials.
I never did uncover a direct citation for published statistics showing increased risk of sexual assault in the first weeks of the semester.
I did find several other interesting resources that I would like to share.
1. NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund produces an excellent 10 minute video called The Undetected Rapist that is a re-enactment of a segment of an interview by Dr. David Lisak with a college student (fraternity member) who committed rape but was never punished or reported. The "interviewee"describes how he selects a "target", flatters her throughout the week, invites her to an exclusive party, gets her drunk as quickly as possible, and then takes her to a room set aside by the fraternity for this purpose. He describes how she told him to stop and it irritated him and how he held her down when she was not cooperative. The students we have heard from who watched it said it is very powerful and that they know guys like that (who do that). We showed the video to every freshman this year as part of orientation activities.
2. The Sexual Victimization of College Women by Bonnie Fisher, Francis Cullen, and Michael Turner is an NIJ/BJS study that appears to refute the early semester risk claims. Like all studies, check out the methods section to understand what was asked, to whom and how. This was useful to me because it discussed some trends and patterns the study uncovered. Best of all it is online for free. <http://www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles1/nij/182369.pdf>http://www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles1/nij/182369.pdf
3. Acquaintance Rape of College Students <http://www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles1/nij/182369.pdf>http://www.ncjrs.org/pdffiles1/nij/182369.pdf by Rana Saampson is a DOJ/COPS study that makes a claim about early semester risk, citing the claim to Benson, D., C. Charton and F. Goodheart. Acquaintance Rape on Campus: A Literature Review.Journal of American College Health 40: 157-165. I have not yet received the copy of this article that I requested, so I don't know what that says.
4. Bibliography of research on undetected (college) rapists. David Lisak sent this to me (Thanks David!). It is available at <http://www.cavnet2.org/>www.cavnet2.org via search by title, author, or document number 3375. It is really interesting as most of the articles are campus relevant. The articles can provide some insight that may help us design prevention programs.
I hope these are useful to you!
Best,
