The director of our Counseling Center forwarded this to me from his
profession's listserv, and I told him I'd seek feedback from the SAPC-L.
Thanks, Janine

Subject: Sexual Assault Programming
I'm looking for feedback regarding a program "Sex Signals" which I
believe someone on the listserve recommended last year. I've heard other
very positive things about this program, but also some negative comments
from our student activities coordinator. Our sexual assault prevention
committee is looking for solid programming, and any comments from this
listserve would be GREATLY appreciated! ALSO any recommendations for
alternative speakers/groups to bring in would be welcomed. Thanks,

Actually, I have a differnt take=2E =20
I have not found that men are terribly put off by that kind of tactic
(altho I have never used the urinal track, I have put posters with similar=
messsages above the urinal ritgh about eye level=2E =20
I general, I find that men are able to identify satyr when they see it --
even biting satry=2E Afterall, men made up a substantial portion fo the
audience that viewed Roseanna -- and you can't get much more satyrically
anti-male than that=2E =20
Debora (if I can be so informal) offered a different take that caused me t=
o
rethink -- esp her point about peeing on a message that is really so
important=2E =20
My main concern with this tactic is not turning men off, but more that it
doesn't tell men what to do=2E Being able to be in men's bathroom when ot=
her
men see these signs, the reaction I've found is typically "Yeah, and=2E=2E=
=2E"=20
They laugh at it, get the point, and don't know what to do=2E Kinda "so,
I've got the power to stop rape=2E=2E=2E now what?"
I certainly understand the concern to develop tactics and strategies to
reach men that don't turn them off, but I'm concerned that at times we go
too far and not allow men to be offended=2E Rape, Domestic Violence,
pornograpy and prostitution=2E=2E=2E sexist violence is inherently, patent=
ly
offensive=2E Frankly, I hope that me DO get offended=2E It demonstrates =
that
they are truly seeing the realities of the issues=2E =20
In addition, I've come to understand, both as an activist/organizer and as=
a therapist, that people tend not to move in any particular direction
unless they are uncomfortable=2E In therapy, we walk the same kind of
tension we do as organizers and activists -- how to turn up the heat enoug=
h
to keep people uncomfortable thus encouraging them to move, without turnin=
g
up the heat so much that we burn folks or encourage them to jump off the
stove completely=2E =20
Shock tactics (as I understand these kinds of action) do have a place in a=
broader array of tactics and efforts to educate, mobilize and organize men=
to take action against sexism and sexist violence=2E =20
