I'm glad this subject is being discussed. Alan is right, it is 
Michael Kimmel, not Michael Scarce who is currently sharing this 
tactic, although I do remember it first surfacing in the late 1980's 
or early 1990's if my memory is correct. Both the local rape crisis 
center in Santa Cruz and the campus Women's Center decided to use 
this approach for last October. I tried my best to explain why I 
thought it a  counterproductive tactic and why I could not support 
it, although my comments were largely ignored. So I'm pleased to read 
in this forum that others share my reservations. We have spent so 
many decades trying to educate that rape is violence not sex (even 
though we know it is frequently a complex interplay of both in terms 
of motive, but not of effect))  so for me the slogan is a giant 
backwards educational step. That it will piss off (parden the pun) a 
lot of men is a given. We cannot afford to alienate more males when 
there is no good reason to do so. I don't tiptoe around issues to 
avoid this, but wherever possible I think we should be looking for 
ways to build alliances with reasonable males. Philosophically it is 
incorrect and takes us back to a biological determinist position for 
rape, for which Susan Brownmiller was criticized in the 1970's. I 
don't think making men more uptight about their genitalia is helpful. 
It is attitudes towards females and everything feminine, not the 
owning of a penis, that leads some men to use sex as a weapon. A lack 
of ease around the body and sexuality is part of the complex mosaic 
of causes of rape. When Oui apologizes for showing a kiss between 
Madonna and Britney Spears and likens their showing the kiss to 
showing graphic images of the war wounded, the connections are pretty 
blatant.
