Subject: Virginia Wellness Initiative
Description:
The Virginia Wellness Initiative (VWI) was established on a simple premise: community service is the logical conclusion of a medical education. To this end, VWI is committed to conducting evidence-based, student-organized health screening and education events in Charlottesville. These events are designed to help empower the people of Charlottesville with knowledge that will help them make informed decisions to safeguard their own health. In addition, these screenings give UVA medical students the opportunity to take leadership roles in identifying pressing health concerns using the medical literature and addressing those concerns through education or strategic testing. Finally, our screenings provide students with clinical experience early in their medical education and promote opportunities for engagement with faculty mentors outside the classroom.Although this organization has members who are University of Virginia students and may have University employees associated or engaged in its activities and affairs, the organization is not a part of or an agency of the University. It is a separate and independent organization which is responsible for and manages its own activities and affairs. The University does not direct, supervise or control the organization and is not responsible for the organization's contracts, acts or omissions.
