iui - Intersections of Urban Inequality (IUI)

Subject: Intersections of Urban Inequality (IUI)

Description: Welcome to the listserv for a new working group at UVA dedicated to interdisciplinary research on urban inequality, Intersections of Urban Inequality (IUI).

Who are we?
Founded by a group of faculty and graduate students in history, African American Studies, environmental sciences, and engineering, IUI seeks to promote interdisciplinary approaches to the study of race, space, and urban environmental inequality. We aim to bring scholars and students broadly interested in questions related to race and inequality and/or conducting research centered on urban spaces together to share data, interpretation, and research methodologies. In so doing, we hope to enrich each other’s work and gain new insights into the racial dimensions of inequality in urban spaces. We are guided by the belief that those whose work occupies the same physical space (in this case, cities), no matter the focus or approach, have much to learn from each other, and by providing a venue for discussion of mutual interests, we can gain new insights into our own work, as well as contribute to the intellectual and methodological enrichment of each other and our respective disciplines.

We will be using this email distribution list (iui@virginia.edu) to send out announcements of upcoming IUI workshops and other talks and events of interest. The schedule of upcoming meetings is listed below. We will be sending out a separate announcement closer to each meeting with room location and a link to RSVP so that we'll know how much food to order. At all events, lunch will be served!

Please forward this announcement to any colleagues or students who might be interested in joining our group. If you received this as a forwarded message and would like to join, please contact Andrew Kahrl (awk6n@virginia.edu) and ask to be added to the list. Or, if you would like to be removed from this list, please email Andrew and he will take care of it.

All the best,

Kimberly Fields (Assistant Professor, African American Studies)
Andrew Kahrl (Associate Professor, History and African American Studies)
Sally Pusede (Assistant Professor, Environmental Sciences)
Malcolm Cammeron (Ph.D. student, History)
Angelique Demetillo (Ph.D. student, Atmospheric Chemistry/Environmental Sciences)
Ciara Horne (Ph.D. student, Systems Engineering)
