i64 - Traffic Info for I-64 Commuters from the Valley

Subject: Traffic Info for I-64 Commuters from the Valley

Hello! Thanks for your interest in the I-64 Employee Commuters List (i64@virginia.edu).

The purpose of the list is to send short text messages about traveling issues (traffic/accidents/weather, etc) for use by UVa employees commuting from the Shenandoah Valley area (those traveling eastbound in the morning and westbound in the evening).
Messages should be limited to 140 characters and should be limited to I-64 where it branches from I-81 in Staunton to Exit 120 in Charlottesville.

Messages to the list should be concise like this:
Accident at MM107. 2 lanes blocked. Crozet Exit Blocked.
Fender-Bender MM 111 - 35mph - shoulder blocked.

You will want to join a regular email address (personal or business) and your phone's SMS text message email address, as messages will only be accepted if your address is a registered user (this nearly eliminates spam).

To join a regular email address on this list, click "Subscribe" on the left navigation bar at https://lists.virginia.edu/sympa/info/i64. You can do this once logged in via NetBadge for UVa addresses, or you can also log out of NetBadge and click "subscribe" to use your personal email address.

To join and have messages go to your cell phone as a text message:

OPTION 1: LOG OUT OF NetBadge and go to https://lists.virginia.edu/sympa/subscribe/i64. Do not log in but click "Subscribe" and follow the prompts to enter your SMS email address in the format displayed below.
An initial "password" will be sent to your cell phone to verify that you want to be subscribed and you will need to enter that password on the sympa site to confirm your subscription.
NOTE: Some cell phone carriers truncate long SMS messages and you may not see the password. In this case, use option 2:

OPTION2: Send your cell phone SMS email address in the format noted below to: i64-request@virginia.edu and we can add it for you.

Email Address Formats:
[phonenumber]@pcs.ntelos.net (nTelos Wireless)
[phonenumber]@txt.att.net (AT&T)
[phonenumber]@message.alltel.com (Alltel Wireless)
[phonenumber]@messaging.sprintpcs.com (Sprint)
[phonenumber]@tmomail.net (Tmobile)

If you have any trouble subscribing, please contact the list owners by sending a note to i64-request@virginia.edu and we will be happy to help.
