Hello VAA!
Warning: Long-ish Email
First, we are going to be hosting SSA speaker Ashley Miller
this Thursday at 7PM in Minor Hall for a talk on diversity in atheism. It’s
going to be an engaging talk on a very important issue, and we encourage all
who are interested in picking her brain to join us before the talk for dinner
on the corner. We will be meeting at 5:30 at the plaza between Newcomb Hall and
the bookstore and we hope to see all your wonderful, unbelieving faces there!
From her blog:
Ashley F. Miller is a writer, activist, and communications scholar from South Carolina, who has worked for LGBT, secular, and women’s rights for over a decade. She is one of the leading young women in the secular movement, speaking regularly at schools and conferences across the country about feminism and communications. She has written for dozens of publications, including Salon, Freethought Blogs, and the academic journal CrossCurrents, and run local communications campaigns for law firms, news websites, and secular organizations. She is a PhD candidate in Mass Communications at the University of South Carolina, where she has focused on women and minorities in the media. Before returning to school for her PhD, she worked in film and television in Los Angeles. She has a Masters in Film Production from FSU, and a Bachelors degree in Film Studies from Emory University.
Second, we are taking dues! Dues are $10 and allow you to vote in VAA elections and will help us to continue doing cool atheist stuff!
We are also selling VAA shirts! Hopefully many of you have already seen them. They’re pretty awesome and feature a quote by our Lord and Savior, Thomas Jefferson. Shirts are $15, but if you already paid dues and want one it’s $10, and if you want to pay dues and buy a shirt, it’s $20 altogether. We don’t have many left, so act now to get these amazing savings!
Finally, we’re still trying to advertise our coming clothing drive for the homeless and needy before this Thanksgiving. An email about this is coming soon, but in the meantime, you should join the facebook event!
