Here at the library we just received a copy of "Nothing : John Cage and 4'33" by Nicholas Day, illustrated by Chris Raschka.

It's a children's book and it is delightful! It begins by describing David Tudor's approach to the concert, then the concert itself (that is, just the performance of that piece) and the audience reaction. In doing so, it explains to kids the concept behind the piece and the ability to perceive the sounds around you. After the story there is a section "About John Cage" that explains (in more adult language) who Cage was, what he did, and provides a bibliography and list of recordings as well as mentioning the app created by the John Cage Trust.

The book probably would be just as instructive for adults who "don't get it."
