Musica Elettronica

A CROSS-SECTION OF ELECTRONIC MUSIC

FROM ITS START IN THE EARLY 50S UP TO THE PRESENT

In the early 50s, composers active in a few European music hotspots started to experiment with electronic sound generated by machines rather than musicians. Without doubt, Gesang der Jünglinge by Karlheinz Stockhausen is the first masterpiece created in this new medium. It was realized at the Electronic Music Studio of West German Radio in Cologne, Germany in 1955-56. So was Kontrabandt, composed by Petr Kotik ten years later.  In 1967, Kotik worked in Cologne, realizing a commission by the Electronic Music Studio, where Stockhausen had since become the director. The works by Laurie Spiegel, A Harmonic Algorithm, and Michael Schumacher, Filters and Filtered, use current digital sound technology, which, in comparison to the analogue equipment of the 50s and 60s, is readily available to individual artists within their own studios. A commission by Ilan Volkov and the 2016 Adelaide Festival in Australia, Praised Fan by Phill Niblock combines pre-recorded sounds with a live bassoon performance. It was composed for the French bassoonist Dafne Vicente-Sandoval, who premiered it at the Adelaide Festival. The December 9th performance will mark its U.S. premiere.

The S.E.M. Ensemble is honored to perform within the exhibit of recent sculptures by Mark di Suvero (on view until December 10). This is the second time that SEM will perform at Paula Cooper Gallery in the sculptural environment of di Suvero’s work. This time, some of the sculptures will be used to derive the live sounds.
