COSMOPOLIS: 49 WALTZES FOR THE WORLD (2013)
A Video Installation by Roberta Friedman and Daniel Loewenthal
Based on 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs by John Cage

A graphic score by experimental composer John Cage identified and superimposed 49 multicolored triangles on the Hagstrom map of New York City. Participants were encouraged to go to street locations at the apex of each angle and listen to the sounds of the city. Building on Cage's concept that his work could be "performed" other places, Cosmopolis: 49 Waltzes for the World is a series of video installations from cities around the globe. Striking visual and sound portraits taken from the streets of Beijing, Graz, Cairo, Detroit, and New York City reflect urban cultures in transition.
