Dear Silencers,
My book, Silencing the Sounded Self: John Cage and the American Experimental
Tradition, including a brief introduction to the new edition, is finally
coming out in paperback and e-book. The official publication date is November
5. The paperback is a limited run so if interested in that format don't wait
too long. E-book version, of course, will continue to be available.
A bit of nostalgia: I announced the hardcover publication on the Silence list
in 1998 and I remember well the reaction (justified) of some readers
regarding the list price of $50.00. In the end it didn't matter because the
book was only available to purchase for a little over a year, and thus only a
few people were able to buy the book at all.
Silencing the Sounded Self was originally supposed to be published as a
paperback for a price of around $25.00 but when my editor left the press the
decision instead was to do a 700 copy hardcover run. The book sold out within
the year (not bad for a university press book) and since then has been both
difficult to find and expensive to buy. Current list price this time around
is just under $50.00 (now academic press books are, as we all know, often
costing upwards of $100.00) and I've seen prices in the mid-$30.00s for
pre-order.
Anyway, the point is if you ever wanted to own a copy of my book for a
(somewhat) reasonable price you'll have your chance soon!
